장태완 별세 R.I.P. Chang Tae-wan

A hero for just doing his job in defending the capital when Chun Doo-hwan and his buddies initiated their coup, Chang Tae-wan [sic] suffered for doing what was right but became a legend in his own time. He died today at the age of 79.

I've been interviewed by New American Media. It got chopped up a lot and the questions were initially written in Korean, and when they got translated at NAM they no longer fit my answers, which as a result look even farther off topic than they would otherwise, even when I venture off myself...

About being at the 한국일보....

Just like the local paper in an American city with a population of under 50,000 is going to be full of stories about the swearing in of a new president at the Lion's Club and the 20th anniversary gala of the bingo club that meets weekly at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Korean papers in America are full of stories about the community itself. I think this inevitably just has to be the basic staple, but with a tiny staff trying to cover any Korean event of this nature from Sacramento to Monterey, doing stories that provide analysis and perspective beyond the daily rat race often feels like a luxury.

Don Perata event

Lots to catch up on, including my coverage on Asian Health Services' new Frank Kiang Medical Center, and the public assembly in downtown Oakland following the BART trial verdict, especially along 14th, the original old Oakland Koreatown.

In the meantime, Enoch Shin of Hankook Tire on International Blvd, together with the SF Bay Area Korean American Assn (the "Haninhoe," which, btw, is not endorsing him) held a fundraiser at the tire shop for Don Perata.

Mr. Perata's an interesting character. Quite frank and straightforward, too. Enoch Shin is quite enthusiastic about him, and he's been one of Mr. Shin's customers for years, apparently.

단 페레타 오클랜드 시장 후보 후원의 밤
“비즈니스 하기 좋은 도시 만들터”

단 페레타 오클랜드 시장후보를 위한 오클랜드 한인사회의 후원의 밤 행사가 9일 저녁 7시 오클랜드시 인터네셔날 블루버드에 위치한 한국타이어 북가주 총판(대표 신영목)에서 열렸다.

김상언 샌프란시스코 지역 한인회장은 이날 축사를 통해 “한인사회가 이제는 주류사회 속에서 충분한 역할을 할 시기가 되었다”며 “우리 한인들이 직접 주류사회로 나아가 한인들의 권익신장을 도모하는 것도 중요한 부분이지만 그에 못지않게 주류 정치인을 후원함으로써 한인커뮤니티의 권익을 찾아가는 것도 굉장히 중요한 부분”이라고 강조했다.

김옥련 한미노인봉사회 회장은 현재 오클랜드 시의원인페레타 후보가 주 상원 부의장으로 있을 때부터 잘 알았다며 당선되고 나면 시청과 가까운 거리에 있는 한미 노인회관을 방문해 줄 것을 당부했다.

유병주 코리아나플라사 대표는 “오클랜드 한인들이 목소리를 높여야 한다”며 “단 페레타 후보는 우리가 꼭 필요한 인물”이라고 했다.

신영목 털보바디샾 대표는“페레타 후보는 자기의 지지자들을 잘 기억하는 사람”이라며 “오클랜드는 지난 4년간 좋은 소식이 별로 없었는데 페레타 시의원이 시장에 출마한다는 소식이야말로 오클랜드에 필요한 희소식”이라고 말하고 “당선되면 모든 거리에서 매춘부, 도둑, 낙서범 등을 몰아내달라”고 주문했다.

페레타 후보는 감사의 말에서 “한국타이어 북가주 총판 앞에서 범법자들이 배회하고 있다는 연락이 오면 경찰서장과 함께 달려와서 반드시 몰아내겠다”며 “나는 정치인이지 사회학자가 아닌만큼 온갖 사회문제를 해결하기 전에 오클랜드를 장사하기 좋은 곳으로 먼저 만들어 시장의 임무를 다할 것”이라고 약속했다.

한편 신 대표는 이날 열린 행사 전부터 주변 한인들 통해 모은 4천달러와 이날 모인 후원금을 합하면 7천달러라고 밝히고 1만달러를 모금해 페레타 후보에게 전달하겠다고 말했다.
