Glenn Beck does Black History Month in 10 minutes

Yours truly just became a Glenn Beck fan, by way of The Root. Not only did I learn some things, it means so much more coming from him.

The most interesting individual there, perhaps in part since I know most of the Korean bigwigs in Oakland, was a certain Gene Hazzard. He works for the Oakland Post, Oakland's black (church!) newspaper. He was there taking pictures in that capacity, but he has also been behind getting Jennifer support from the African-American community. He's known somewhat among Koreans real active in Oakland civic circles, like the legendary Yoo Keun Bae, the gentleman behind the Koreatown-of-sorts along Telegraph. Mr. Hazzard is interesting man I'll try to interview for the 한국일보 while I'm still there.

Jennifer Pae held her first fundraising kickoff. We Korean speakers are calling her first fundraising event "for mainstream society" (주류사회), the parlance for "non-Korean, ie, the rest of American society."

Anyway, it was fun to watch, I covered it for the KT (article below), and, best of all, I got to become a facebook friend of Jenn's delightful mother. Lovely stuff. Her first fundraising event for the Korean community is the 22nd. Contact myself or call the SF Korean-American Association (Haninhoe) if you're interested.

제니퍼 배 (한국명 배수진)오클랜드시의원 후보가 15일 주류사회 대상 첫 후원금 모금행사를 가졌다.

배씨의 출마지역인 오클랜드 제2선거구에 위치한 오랜 전통을 가진 멕시칸 카폐 '라 에스트레이타(La Estrellita)'에서 열린 이번 모금행사에는 정치계, 교육계, 비즈니시 리더 등 오클랜드의 각계각층 인사 80여명이 참석, 배 후보의 선전을 기원했다.

지난 8일 재선에 성공한 이디 아이런스 알라메다 카운티 민주당 중앙위원회 위원이 참석자들에게 배 후보를 소개하면서 “제니퍼 배 후보는 기득권자나 다른 정치인들을 두려워하거나 눈치를 보지 않는다”면서 “특히 평등한 대학 교육 접근권 등 소수민족과 어려운 계층을 위해 노력해 온 점이 배 후보의 큰 미덕으로 오클랜드에 꼭 필요한 인재”라고 극찬했다.

배 후보는 “오클랜드는 다른 도시들과는 달리 높은 무단결석율과 낮은 고교졸업률이 심각한 치안 문제로 이어지고 있다"고 우려를 표명한 뒤 "오클랜드에서는 시의회가 교육에 대해 직접 챙겨야 하는 부분이 많기 때문에 교육에 힘쓸 것"이라며 포부를 밝혔다.

배 후보는 또 본보와의 개인 인터뷰를 통해 오는 11월 투표일 당일까지 선거구내에 위치한 가정집 만여 채를 모두 세번씩 호별 방문하는 등 지역에 맞는 구체적인 선거전략을 세우고 있음을 밝히기도 했다.

한편 SF한인회는 22일 6시30분 예정으로 되어 있는 배씨의 한인사회 대상 첫 후원행사(본보 5일 보도)를 이종혁 CPA 사무실에서 오클랜드 한국타이어(대표 신영창)으로 장소가 변경됐다고 밝혔다. 문의는 (415) 252-1346 (한인회).

Hastily cooked up something on Iara Lee at the Korea Times (한국일보) San Francisco, where I'm working as a reporter for a while. Their links die all the time and you can't find stuff, so I'm posting the whole story below.

She's since been released, deported to Turkey, and is now in NYC. She'll be in SF soon, and her assistant says I can have an interview. Upon her arrival in Turkey she gives an impromptu interview with Brazil's Globo TV in which she appears to say she has the Gaza flotilla/Israeli commando incident in high def video, on an SD card hidden in her cameraman's underwear, and that they are going to release it soon. (It's been more than 72 hours, so one begins to wonder what's up.)

이스라엘 총격 구호선, 한국계 여성도 승선

팔레스타인 가자지구에 구호품을 전달하려다 이스라엘군의 공격을 받은 국제 구호선단에 미국 거주 한국계 브라질 여성이 타고 있었으며 이스라엘군에 의해 구금돼 곧 추방될 것으로 1일 알려졌다.

국제 평화 활동가이자 다큐멘터리 감독인 44세 이아리 이씨(사진)는 1984년부터 1989년까지 사우파울로국제영화제 프로듀서로 활동하다 1989년에 도미, 뉴욕에 카피린하 프로덕션스라는 멀티미디어제작사를 설립하는 등 그 동안 미국에서 거주해 왔다. 이씨는 또 2008년 뉴욕 필하모닉 오케스트라의 평양 공연을 추진하는 과정에 참여했으며 남한 인사가 대거 관여하고 있는 북한의 유일한 사립대인 평양과학기술대학교의 이사이기도 한 것으로 전해지고 있다.

이씨는 지난달 27일 터키에서 구호선에 승선했으며 이스라엘군 헬기가 구호선단을 포위하자 페이스북을 통해 친구들에게 급박한 상황을 알렸다. 이씨는 구금 전날 브라질의 시사 윕사이트인 ‘포토겐테’에 올린 “내가 가자지구에 왜 가는가?”라는 제목의 투고문에서 “이스라엘의 정책 때문에 마실 물조차 없는 가자지구 팔레스타인 주민들에게 구호품을 전달하는 구호선단의 유일한 브라질 사람이 될 것”이라고 했다.
